Isaac’s Experience as the Christian Life

In Genesis 21-24, Isaac goes through a lot of experiences that mirror the Christian life:

  • In Genesis chapter 21, he is born.  In the same way, Christ is born into us, and we are reborn in him.

  • In the same chapter, Isaac is circumcised.  In Christ, we are baptized.  This is the outward expression of the covenant.

  • Isaac is weaned.  Today, we must be weaned from spiritual milk and move on to solid food.

  • Isaac is mocked by Ishmael.  Ishmael was the product of Abraham’s religious efforts.  Christians can expect to be mocked by the world and by religious people.

  • In Genesis 22, Isaac is offered.  We must be ready to offer ourselves to God.

  • Figuratively, Isaac is killed.  According to Jewish tradition, Isaac was dead in Abraham’s eyes as soon as the Lord asked that he be sacrificed.  As Christians, our outer, natural man must die.

  • Figuratively, Isaac is resurrected.  Again according to the tradition, Isaac was made alive again when God stayed Abraham’s hand.  We must realize that Christ is the resurrection in us.

  • Finally, Isaac is married in Genesis 24.  Rebekah is brought to Isaac in the same way the Church is presented to Christ.  We must be prepared for that wedding.
